Key Features of the Assessment Process
Intake Session
Gain insight into medical and developmental history, school records, previous evaluations, and concerns that are self-reported or reported by family members, family physicians, or other health care providers.
Standardized Screening Tools
Direct observation of behaviours, communication, and social interactions using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2), and/or Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R), and other evidence-based assessment tools. For in-person assessments, tools in use will be determined by the clinician conducting the assessment, and each assessment is tailored to the individual patient’s needs. For online autism diagnostic assessments, a psychiatrist with special interest in autism diagnostics is consulted online.
Assessment Report
Provides a formal diagnosis of autism (if diagnostic criteria is met), other detailed findings, and next steps, including recommended supports, therapies, school accommodations or modifications, and community resources.
Feedback Session
A virtual or phone review of results with discussion of referrals for treatment options, support services, and/or clinical services, such as social work/psychotherapy, occupational therapists, or speech-language pathologists.
Why Early Intervention Matters
A timely diagnosis of ASD can unlock access to government programs, early childhood support, school-based accommodations, community resources, like Autism Ontario, and social services. Early identification may enhance child development, and supports better outcomes in learning, social skills, and daily functioning.
